So it was settled, and we signed me up. I joined the group, which was quickly separated by gender; the guys stood against one wall, and the girls against the opposite wall. Most of these ones seemed like creeps, so I was pretty glad that they were kicked to the curb by the organizers before they were able to interact with me. The waiver, by the way was a release for that show Geek Love , which was filming inside the sessions. Not like, HEAVILY so, but I can be a pretty nervous, socially-awkward person, and the fact that I was a hundred percent calm going into this situation is a reflection of how confident I was feeling. I also had plenty of time to try and stare at Adam West, who was signing autographs in the Comic-Con distance. What really got under my skin was a woman sitting next to me who was very clearly looking to find her true love on this adventure; this made me feel uneasy about my less serious attitude. However, it became pretty clear that about half of the girls who signed up had just done it for shits and giggles, and one, it seemed, had been put up to it by her employers, Necromimi ; right before we went into the room, one of her coworkers magically appeared, offering us those cat ear headsets to wear during the speed dating round if we wanted them. Anyway, as a result of all these borderline unethical shenanigans, I was starting to struggle slightly less with my own reasons for being there. So that was good. Then the guys were allowed in, and despite all being legal adults, we looked like a bunch of awkward tweens at a middle school dance. We were told to take our seats, and very fortunately the girls would remain seated for the duration of the speed dating process.

This weekend, Mark Lee and I ventured into this sublime, swag-filled, seething hive of humanity to subject it to the level of scrutiny to which it has grown accustomed. But first, cosplay! Even more prevalent were the soldiers of fortune. Unsurprisingly, Starlords abounded, taking their rightful place beside the Boba Fetts. But where were the Thors of yore, I ask you?

The participants endeared themselves to me in just that short time, and I expressed hope for a full-fledged series of con speed-dating escapades — and this year I get my wish. The first episode features a brony and all-around nice geek guy Alex, who approaches his Sci-Fi Speed Dating session with the hope of finding a girl interested in dating. Alex often finds himself in the dreaded Friend Zone with his female geek friends, which is described perfectly by the speed-dating host Ryan Glitch in one of the highlights of the episode. You can't help but root for him. Like the original special, Geek Love focuses on telling the participant's story rather than poking fun at them, and getting a glimpse of the cosplay and other sights at NYCC is an added bonus.

Prejudices that plague the wider dating market are checked at the door: Spending three minutes talking about Gundam collectibles is more likely to excite a prospect instead of making their eyes glaze over. And, unlike traditional dating circles that try to encourage women to forgo feminist ideas in order to win true love— never call a man! This is even more poignant considering the comics and their fan worlds are heavily dominated by male artists and creators who seem to think that women are strongest when they forget to wear clothing. To carve out a space where women set the tone for engagement is nothing less than amazing. Could it be that far from being a tiny, repressed minority in Nerd World, female fans are changing the whole game? Heidi MacDonald is the founder and editor in chief of The Beat.
