It checks their health, size, heart rate, kidneys etc. The scan looks for a number of specific problems within the baby but does not and cannot for every possible concern. Sometimes the babies position may mean you require a second scan to ensure that everything is seen clearly. A second scan doesn't mean that something is wrong.
If the scan does raise concerns you may be offered an additional scan with a consultant. The screening team will discuss this with you if necessary. Plan for labour including preparing what to take with you to hospital.
The dating scan can include a nuchal translucency (NT) scan, which is part of the combined screening test for Down's syndrome, if you choose to have this. QA has approximately 12 ultrasound scanning rooms. There is a large dedicated team to providing one to one individual care with the patient during their scan. You may be seen by a sonographer or radiologist depending on the type of scan requested by your referrer.
