I travel a lot and I was in Flagstaff last fall for a few days. Now I'm relocating and have been considering Flagstaff as a new home. Usually I can pick up on the vibe of a city and its type of people very quickly, but Flag was a bit of an anomaly, and even after spending 4 days there a while back, I still couldn't really get a grasp on what the people were like.

But I seem to remember a lot of homeless people, druggies, hippies, desert rats, skater types, tattooed, etc. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with these types of people. They are interesting and provide salt of the earth sort of vibes on a day-to-day basis around town. I love people of all types, personalities and beliefs, and try my best not to judge anyone before getting to know them.

As in, are the types of people I'm seeing actually the highly educated people with degrees, etc.? If so, then I do feel bad for judging them prematurely, and sincerely apologize. To give some context, I am in my late 20s, college degree, athletic and outdoorsy. I love playing almost any sport baseball, basketball, football, etc. But I also don't do drugs, and I'm not really an artist or musician or anything like that. But, some people might also call me "clean cut" or "introverted" especially in comparison to a lot of the more interesting people in Flag.

I certainly don't mind hanging around desert rats and hippies sometimes, but sometimes I also want to clean up, go out and have a nice meal and drinks with some people, etc. Would I be able to find a nice mix of people to hang out with in Flag? Would I find any girls my age out running, biking, climbing, playing volleyball, at the bookstore, etc.

Two disclaimers: I was only there for a small amount of time 4 days the last time I was out in Flag, and my sample size of what I remember is admittedly very small. I'm not trying to imply that what I remember is the norm or anything that's why I'm asking you guys. Once again, I want to re-iterate that I think desert rats, hippies and druggies are usually interesting, cool people. I love making conversation with anyone and everyone around town, and love getting to know people of all demographics.

However, human nature is to hang around with other people that are similar to you at least sometimes , and I just want to be sure that my sort of demographic exists as well. Thank you so much for the information! You have to remember, Flagstaff is a college town. Depending where in town you spent most of your time, and what time of year, you may have been seeing primarily college students who may or may not be year round residents. Or, you just saw a pretty good sampling I like it there, it's got a good vibe and feels a lot like many east coast towns I grew up around.

Where are they hiding if so? People in Flagstaff are.. There are a great many professionals in Flagstaff, but just because they are college educated, they may not necessarily look like what you think they would. It's a laid back atmosphere unlike any other. Yes, that business man or doctor might be in hiking gear because he just came back from the peaks - who knows.

Best not to judge a book by its cover. It's a college town. I'm not sure if people hang around after college, but from what I understand Flag has two distinct populations. College kids and rich people who have homes there, maybe full time, but often vacation homes. I'm sure there are regular, working people there, too, but I don't think that's the average. Below are facts to back it up, but here is the deal: Houses cost way more than in the rest of the state while poverty rates are also much higher.

High poverty rates are likely due to the high number of college students, which Census research has shown skews poverty rates. High housing costs are due to the aforementioned rich people who own real estate in Flag but mostly don't make a living there. Housing median value: Poverty rates: I noticed that the average age for Flagstaff was 26 - is this a skewed statistic? Are there many people in their late 20s in Flagstaff, or is there a serious gap between college age and middle age populations?

Flagstaff is a commercialized college town with highly transitory people. It's a crossroads for travelers going and coming from various parts of the country with sightseer's on their way to the Grand Canyon or Lake Powell areas. It's also a temporary stopover for travelers going east and west plus a lot of truckers use that area for a rest stop. It's also a railroad town, another temporary start or stopping point for Phoenix or Tucson train travelers going also east or west across the country.

If you want to get the feel of the local people you'll need to get out of the central area and head into the backwoods. Check it out today! Let's start with a caveat: Trying to rate places on how they appeal to older singles is like picking a vacation spot for someone else. You could roam the hot spots of a town for months without meeting that special someone , then find a soul mate in a chance encounter at the post office. Still, some cities are better than others for older singles, especially those who are seeking some place to retire.
