Most important, I show sincere gratitude for the participants interviewed as part of this study, of which there would be no data without, and also the city of London for providing a diverse and heterogeneous case study on which to base this research on.
And last but not least, I would like to thank the continuous support and companionship of my beloved boyfriend. Of note, Grindr and Jack'd comprise as two of the most popular location based real-time dating applications, tailored for communication between men. While these apps have provided a platform for gay men to find immediate sexual gratification, their applications in the wider context of the gay community, remain poorly defined. Despite their widespread use by individuals across the globe, the role in which gay dating apps play in shaping the gay communities in different countries, have not yet been explored fully.
In particular, differential attitudes and applications towards these dating platforms are exhibited by individuals hailing from western and eastern civilisations. The migration of Asian ethnic minorities to high population western cities, has seen a rise in the development of both racially driven discrimination, exclusion and Asian fetishism, partly driven by the western-centric app designs.
Furthermore, differences in cultural expectations and transnational attitudes has seen the use of gay dating apps for uses other than their intended purposes, such as gaining 'social capitals' through social networking and other non-conventional intentions. Here, a systematic approach employing both interviews and representative reviews of user profiles from Grindr and Jack'd has been developed in order to investigate the roles that these applications play in the day to day life of gay East Asian migrants.
Thus this thesis aims to explore the ways in which gay dating apps are utilised by East Asian gay men in the construction of self-presentation and self identity in London. Unlike conventional dating websites, these dating apps facilitate online interactions with users physically nearby based on their proximity.
Expanding on the negative experiences of being victims of sexual racism and discrimination of Asian gay men in Belgium, Peumans argues that while discussions of same-sex relationships and communities are frequented by European societies, they are often centred on popularised and controversial cultures e. Muslim communities which are non-accepting of gay culture, rather than Asian cultures which may even exhibit similar conservatism, and thus result in under or mis-representation of certain ethnic cultures.
Hence our ambivalent relationships to place an identity, and our affection for placelessness and movement. Often these cities or countries are occupied by individuals of different ethnicity, culture, language or social habits, thus creating a boundary in which migrants find themselves struggling to adapt to. These concepts encapsulate capital in the form of gaining desirable and beneficial social and cultural understanding about their environments.
Despite the high level of interest by researchers into the applications of gay dating apps by individuals, there maintains little attention placed into specific ethnic groups which may be under-represented within the LGBTQ communities. The focus on this thesis is thus to provide additional information into the lifestyles of East-Asian gay migrant communities following immigration to an unfamiliar city, and the impact in which gay dating applications have on their social lives.
Due to the contrasting nature of cultural backgrounds and social norms between western cities such as London and Asian countries, this research will focus on specifically on East Asian newcomers in London. Experiences of East-Asian Gay Men on Mobile Dating Applications in London E technologies in the creation and maintenance of personal relationships is to understand through the examination of daily lives either through digital- mediated communication or face-to-face methods Grindr Grindr is a pioneer LBRTD mobile application released in with the purpose of providing gay men with an accessible platform for social or sexual encounters Handel and Shklovski, The mobile application has accumulated more than 10 million users worldwide across countries, with over , users in the United Kingdom alone.
At the top of the list, London comprises as one of the largest Grindr hubs, currently estimated at approximately 62, users Advertise with Grindr, As London boasts an extremely multicultural and diverse demographic and is home to one of the largest immigrant populations in the world, it provides an interesting and ideal framework for research of how geo-social platforms such as Grindr are used by these communities.
Upon registering and logging into Grindr, a user gains access to the profile grid where they can view and interact with other individuals based on their geographic proximity in real-time. Up to users can be simultaneously viewed within the free version, while Grindr Xtra expands this up to profiles. All elements are optional and users can opt for total anonymity if desired. Currently, Grindr is limited to single user-to-user chat.

At the bottom are menus for accessing messages, settings, etc. Experiences of East-Asian Gay Men on Mobile Dating Applications in London E At the very beginning of its existence, the Grindr app was initially founded to provide users with the ability to find immediate sex Mowlabocus, Over time, Grindr has evolved into a more social virtual environment due to an increasing undesirable perspective of sex-seeking apps and simultaneously due to user base expansion.
Released by Online Buddies Ltd. Expansion of the user interface capabilities and functions provides users with more options on how to interact with other users. The number of profiles visible to a user is again limited for free users, however profile filtering options are available to both free and premium versions. Name, profile headline, descriptions and physical traits such as height, weight, ethnicity and distance from users are visible from within a profile. Supplementary descriptors such interests, activities, music, movies and books are also present. Literature Review 2. However, public spheres were actually less accessible for people who lived in rural areas. The internet has provided a revolutionary platform which maintains accessibility without the limitation of space and distance. An increasing representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in society in the s has lead to increasing diversity in not only sexuality but ethnicity, throughout both real and virtual societies.
From the s to present, technological advances have brought about distinctive shifts in research topics and strategies employed by researchers. In the early s, the introduction of internet access to homes across the globe, revolutionised the outlets of which LGBTQs were able to interact and connect with friends and partners. The use of the internet by LGBTQ members has prevailed from since the early days of slow dial-up internet speeds, to the current high-speed and highly accessible smartphones and tablets.
These shifts in accessibility have allowed many researchers to further investigate links and correlations between LGBTQs and the internet and its types of media. Researchers in the early 21st century focused on online dating-sites - then a popular virtual environment for all people, in particular LGBTQs to explore their own sexualities amongst their own communities. Such vernacular became widespread throughout the gay community and revolutionised the virtual medium that they use Friess, Then from to a new form of computer-mediated communication CMC emerged through the introduction of specific dating websites such as Manhunt, Gay.
The rise of mobile applications would see the decline of CMC-type dating websites. While the communication medium would change, the messages that gay men exchange, would be maintained Mcluhan, Combined with third-party applications, proximity features led to location awareness in mobile games Licoppe and Inada, , social coordination Guha and Birnholtz, ; Lindqvist et al. These studies not only investigate the use of online media by groups of individuals, but also include perceivable links based on sexuality and immigration studies, including discriminatory scenarios which are encountered by these individuals both online and off line.
Hence, although the internet provides a platform for intimate communication between minorities, immigrants and other individuals outside of urban centres Gray, , these virtual environments are still populated by xenophobia and prejudice. Such cases are also reported by informants from other studies who describe the role of the mainstream media in inappropriate propagation of the globalisation of western identity, attitudes and models Dhoest, Prior to a shift in research focus on internet usage by LGBTQ migrant groups in the digital era, research into the in visibility and racial discrimination against ethnic minorities in western gay cultures have been well documented Duberman, ; Milburn, ; Maaten, ; Altman, ; Hee, Experiences of East-Asian Gay Men on Mobile Dating Applications in London E Dominance of Anglo-western cultures in the modern era has seen the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities within the gay community Vasta, ; Altman, Expanding on this notion, rather than being victims of obvious racism, ethnic minorities are often just ignored in the gay media Plummer, Drawing the topic of this research to the context of gay Asian men, seminal studies by Chan have shown that gay Asian men in the USA are more comfortable identifying with western gay circles than their own ethnic communities.
Although this example of cultural integration may first appear desirable, gay men of south-east Asian descent have described themselves as victims of strong discrimination and stereotyping by gay western communities Ridge et al. An abstract from Ridge et al. Not so much being ignored but feeling a bit invisible I think. Reoccurrence of these experiences negatively impacts the feelings and sense of belonging to the gay community by these individuals Peumans, ; Woo, ; Gosine, A study in Australia has similarly identified anti-Asian sentiments on the gay dating website Gaydar Riggs, Interestingly, it appears that these social issues are not limited to only minorities of Asian-descent.
Returning back to Britain, narratives from Black and South Asian individuals describe how they feel likely to face cultural obstacles which set them apart from the gay white British mainstream McKeown et al. Experiences of East-Asian Gay Men on Mobile Dating Applications in London E While the internet provides a means of social communication between individuals who may already know each other outside of the cyberspace real-life friends, work colleagues, etc.
With the addition of dating applications, tailored for specific communication purposes and coupled to geographic proximity, these technologies allow socialisation between individuals who are connected by location and may even have overlapped social circles. These differences can also be a source of misunderstandings and discrimination. In effect, these issues affect the self- presentation of an individual, and coupled to social rejection experienced on gay dating platforms, can exacerbate a feeling of ostracisation Shield, Thus, the growing social attitudes adopted by users of gay dating applications along with these GPS-enabled features, result in increasingly ambiguous boundaries both social and geographic in a transnational context.
Although technological advancements with internet and mobile devices have stimulated a wider adoption of dating sites and applications among gay men, cultural differences and prejudices remain prominent despite the ambiguity of transnational boundaries and the clashing of cultures. Research Aims This research focusses on East Asian gay men with a migratory background, and aims to deconvolute the psychographic variables involved with their use of mobile dating applications and interactions within the gay community of an unfamiliar city.
The study will provide details and knowledge into the particular lifestyle of these individuals and provide a framework on which remedial actions may be developed to combat the under-representation of ethnic minority groups. A systematic exploration of the issues highlighted and reviewed in the current literature will be investigated in the context of three research questions: Methodology For the investigation of LBRTD applications employed in the gay dating communities, case studies have been compiled ethnographically, including personal accounts from participants and through to interviews of individuals.

Two gay men swap Grindr profiles to highlight racism on LGBTQ+ dating apps
It's also particularly challenging for members of the LGBTQ community, who've traditionally only had access to hetero-based sites and apps. When I was on the apps in the late aughts, queer women could barely be found. I met so many cis straight men who checked the "women seeking women" box so they could match with queer women who, they fantasized, would magically change their sexual orientation just for them. While at one time, such signs did exist in our city—in restaurants, movie theatres, and apartment buildings—they would be protested if anyone saw them on our streets today. Just as many discriminatory attitudes are more freely expressed on the internet, within LGBT communities, preferences against Asian men are sometimes expressed more easily online than many may be willing to do so face to face. After taking a professional and personal development course about inspiring change within communities, Ho chose to work on a project to address issues within the local gay Asian male community. It's not a dating site, and Ho does operate a separate website that is exactly that: When Ho who is of Chinese descent and is Malaysian-born but Vancouver-raised came out over 20 years ago, he found the local LGBT community to be a confusing and unwelcoming place. There's a lot of discrimination online; you go into bars, you're treated differently; and learning how to navigate that as a brand new gay newbie, coming out can be a little bit of challenge.
I wanted a glimpse of the life I could have — someone who looked like me and could understand my struggle. It was what gay society told me was the pinnacle of male beauty. For a long time, I thought that coming out would open doors to a place where I could be open about my identity without judgement. As gay men, we all go through an emotional journey to discover a sense of self; to allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to come out and let our lives fall into place. And while I found acceptance in innumerable ways through friends, coming out also meant entering a world brimming with a distinct, ubiquitous form of discrimination — where racism runs rampant and everyone is boxed into manufactured stereotypes.
One evening while browsing the wildly popular gay dating app Grindr, Sinakhone Keodara came across a user profile with just one short descriptor: That same day, he received a call from a friend on the other side of the country, who, like Keodara, is Asian American. The two men began talking about the exclusionary language they had recently seen on the app. Keodara, who immigrated to the U. So he took to social media last week and announced plans to bring a class-action lawsuit against Grindr for what he described as racial discrimination.
